About V. E. Johnson

V. E. Johnson can’t remember a time when she wasn’t writing—from turning 8th grade vocabulary assignments into stories to spinning wild tales for her parents to avoid chores. Her passion for storytelling eventually led her to journalism, despite her dad’s best efforts to convince her that writers starve.
She graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2020 with degrees in journalism and history. Soon after, she began her writing career as a journalist for the Chatham News + Record, a community weekly in rural North Carolina. There, she founded and led La Voz de Chatham, a bilingual reporting initiative serving Chatham County’s Hispanic community.
The initiative published four Spanish-language print editions, making history as the county’s first Spanish-language newspaper, and her reporting won eight awards from the North Carolina Press Association. She left the paper in 2022 because as it turns out, writers do starve.
Since then, V. E. hasn't quite kicked her news addiction and now self-medicates by writing fiction. Her satirical short fiction skewers late-stage capitalism, everyday injustices, and the occasional dive-bombing cockroach. Once she recovers from a chronic case of procrastination, she plans to write novels and novellas across genres, including historical fiction, speculative fiction, and dark urban fantasy.
